40 Fun Facts About TH Brown, the Australian Furniture Brand with 115 Years of Design History

TH Brown is one of Australia’s great heritage furniture brands. Founded in South Australia and shaped by more than a century of craftsmanship, the brand has earned its place in Australian design history. These 40 fun facts trace the story of TH Brown, from Port Pirie beginnings and early chair making in Adelaide to national success and its modern revival.

1

TH Brown traces its beginnings to 1911 in Port Pirie, South Australia.

2

Thomas Howard Brown was born on 20 September 1889 at Telowie, near Port Pirie.

3

He came from a big family. Thomas and Mary Ann Brown had 15 children, though only three survived to adulthood.

4

Hard work started early. While still at St Mark’s Private School in Port Pirie, Brown worked nights on the wharves.

5

He learnt chair making in Port Pirie with his brother Jim at W.J. Pimlott’s.

6

Before building the business in Adelaide, Brown expanded his skills with the Melbourne Chair Company in Collingwood.

7

He also worked with Emerson Brothers in South Melbourne.

8

Tasmania was part of his training too. Brown spent time with Henry Bills & Co. in Launceston before returning to Adelaide.

9

His first known commission was not a chair. In 1910, he secured a contract for the South Australian Railways.

10

That job involved making decorative timber valance boards for the goods sheds at the Mile End rail yards.

11

He was paid 1 shilling and ½ pence per board for that railway job.

12

The scale was enormous. Brown produced nearly 40,000 valance boards.

13

He reportedly made them at a rate of 60 per hour on a band saw bought on time payment.

14

In January 1912, Brown began chair making in a corrugated iron shed in a backyard in Carrington Street, Adelaide.

15

He started with almost nothing. Brown said he had just £2 14s to his name.

16

He spent £2 10s of that on a vertical spindle for chair making.

17

That original spindle was kept by the company for years as a cherished museum piece.

18

By 1914, Brown Brothers had moved into leased premises on the eastern side of Stephen’s Street, just off Halifax Street in Adelaide.

19

In 1915, the business was known as Brown Brothers Wholesale Chair Manufacturers.

20

On 22 November 1916, Thomas Howard Brown married Elsie Davey née James at St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Adelaide.

21

In April 1918, Brown Brothers bought the Stephen’s Street site for £800.

22

In 1920, the business shifted east again to a site on Halifax Street, just west of Hurtle Square.

23

From 1921, the Brown family lived at Young Street, Wayville.

24

In 1923, Howard Brown was a foundation member of Kooyonga Golf Club.

25

In late 1925, Brown Brothers moved to Rosslyn Street, Hiltonia on a 1.9 acre site bought for £750.

26

The Rosslyn Street factory was substantial for its day, measuring about 300 feet by 100 feet and featuring jarrah flooring throughout.

27

The site was chosen partly because it was close to the Mile End rail yards, making transport to country and interstate markets easier.

28

By the late 1920s, Brown Brothers was producing 4,000 chairs a month.

29

At that point, the company employed 30 workers and had a capital value of £15,000.

30

In 1928, the name expanded to Brown Brothers Wholesale Furniture Manufacturers.

31

In March 1930, Brown Brothers opened a retail outlet, Brown’s Limited, at 66–68 Hindley Street, Adelaide.

32

In December 1934, Howard Brown severed his business connection with his brother Jim.

33

That same year, Brown Brothers became T.H. Brown and Sons.

34

In 1947, the company manufactured its one millionth chair.

35

In mid-1947, Brown and Sons took the trade name T.H.B. Chairs, retaining it for about a decade.

36

By the mid-1950s, TH Brown was producing 100,000 chairs a year.

37

By then, the business was selling into five states and the Northern Territory.

38

TH Brown was described as the largest chair manufacturer in the southern hemisphere.

39

At its peak in the 1960s and early 1970s, the company produced almost 150,000 chairs annually and employed 300 people.

40

Relaunched in 2018 by Simon and Toni, TH Brown entered a new era in 2022 when Toni stepped forward as ReFounder.
